Not Really.Rachel Kolbhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12953481886156344682noreply@blogger.comBlogger2125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7677916501490353207.post-48335993631949392542014-11-12T10:33:47.954-08:002014-11-12T10:33:47.954-08:00I was looking for sources on Audism with newborn D...I was looking for sources on Audism with newborn Deaf infants and came across this. This reply is pretty late, but...

The FDA's stem cell "experiment" on Deaf babies is absolutely a form of Audism. Because of how society views persons having "hearing loss," as persons that need to be "fixed." It's the same idea with Racism, it's about systematic oppression of people of different identities. Change all instances in your words of Audism with Racism and Deaf with Black, and Hearing with White and see how it looks, this is how we feel.

Let me do it: " I just got the following Moveon.org petition message in a forwarded email from an on-campus cultural awareness group I'm involved with. It's a pretty biased look at some (in my view) exciting strides in white-loss research, but it's a typical enough response from Black advocates that I thought I'd post it here. Just for the record, I generally don't agree with the big-B black community's views on "racism," maybe because I'm not culturally Black myself. Racism, if you want to use that word, does exist in the forms of black people not being given the consideration and opportunities that white people have, but honestly research such as the following is intended to help, not harm. I'm all for stem cell research - I think it's beyond amazing. And, once again, whiteness is a wonderful thing too. And, yet once again, it doesn't have to be either-or.

Although this raises the question all over again of whether black people should choose between being black and being white. Jury's out on that one. I've written about it on this blog before, but honestly whenever I return to this issue I get a little tired of thinking about it in such polarized, dogmatic terms."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7677916501490353207.post-17828823607181434302012-01-29T06:28:37.429-08:002012-01-29T06:28:37.429-08:00Exciting.Exciting.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
